Unit Rental Cost
Estimator
Calculate the minimum profitable rate to rent out your unit per day and per km. Includes financing, maintenance, insurance and depreciation in the analysis.
The cost of renting out a freight truck in Mexico ranges between $800 and $3,500 MXN per day depending on the vehicle type (box truck, torton, tractor-trailer), whether it includes an operator, allowed mileage and area of operation. For the rental to be profitable for the owner, the daily rate should cover at least depreciation, insurance, proportional maintenance and the cost of financing if applicable. This calculator determines the minimum profitable rate per day and per km based on your unit's actual expenses.

Frequently asked questions
How much is charged to rent out a freight truck in Mexico?
The rate varies by unit type. A 3.5-ton truck can rent for between $800 and $1,500 MXN per day. A tractor-trailer between $1,500 and $3,500 MXN. What matters isn't blindly following the market, but first calculating your real cost and making sure the rate you charge covers all your expenses and leaves you a margin. With Smart Fleet you can log all these costs and see in real time if your unit is profitable.
Why should I include depreciation in my rate?
Because even though you don't pay it to anyone every month, your unit loses value over time. If you don't include it in your rate, you're operating at a loss in the long run. A $1,200,000 MXN unit depreciates approximately $15,000 MXN a month. If you don't recover it through your rates, when you want to sell or replace the unit you won't have the funds to do so.
Do fuel and the operator's payroll go into this calculation?
Generally not, because in most rental contracts, the renter pays for fuel and the operator. This calculator is designed for the costs that you, as the unit owner, must cover regardless of whether the unit is working or not. If your business model does include these costs, add them under "Other fixed costs".
How do I tell apart the daily rate from the per-km rate?
The daily rate applies when the renter uses the unit regardless of how many km it travels (full-time rental). The per-km rate applies when charged based on km actually traveled, more useful for occasional trips or variable routes. Many contracts combine both: a low daily base rate + an additional per-km cost. This calculator computes the minimum profitable rate under both modalities.
Do I need a contract to rent out my unit?
Yes, it is highly recommended. A unit rental contract should include: the parties involved, description of the unit (plates, serial number), rental term, rate and payment method, delivery and return condition, maintenance and insurance responsibilities, and clauses for damages or accidents. Without a contract, disputes are difficult to resolve and your liability can be ambiguous.
