Fuel Efficiency
Calculator

Calculate the km/l efficiency of your truck or fleet and discover how much you can save by optimizing consumption.

The fuel efficiency of a cargo truck in Mexico ranges between 2.5 and 5 km/l depending on the vehicle type, load, and terrain — a fully loaded tractor-trailer on the highway gets approximately 3.5 km/l with diesel. To calculate efficiency, divide the kilometers driven by the liters consumed; efficiency below average indicates mechanical or driving issues. Use this calculator to get your unit's exact efficiency and compare it with the sector average.

Frequently asked questions

How is fuel efficiency calculated?

Efficiency (km/l) = Kilometers driven ÷ Liters consumed in the same period. For more accuracy, measure from a full tank until you fill it again and record the odometer km.

How many liters does a cargo truck consume per kilometer?

A tractor-trailer consumes between 0.29 and 0.40 liters per km (2.5 to 3.5 km/l). A medium truck between 0.13 and 0.17 l/km (6-8 km/l). A pickup or van between 0.07 and 0.10 l/km (10-14 km/l). Factors like load, route, speed, and maintenance affect consumption.

What causes low fuel efficiency?

The most common causes are: underinflated tires (increases consumption up to 3%), dirty filters, worn injectors, excess speed, harsh braking, excessive air conditioning, overloading, and unmaintained engines. Up-to-date preventive maintenance can improve efficiency by 5% to 15%.

How much does the type of diesel affect efficiency?

Premium or Ultra Low Sulfur (ULS) diesel can improve efficiency by 1% to 3% compared to standard diesel, in addition to reducing wear on injectors and the exhaust system. On long highways, the km savings can outweigh the price difference between fuel types.

Does efficiency vary with altitude?

Yes. At higher altitudes, the air is less dense and internal combustion engines produce less power, which can reduce efficiency by 5% to 10% for every 1,000 meters above sea level. In cities like Mexico City (2,240 m) or Toluca (2,680 m) this effect is noticeable, especially with heavy loads.

How to improve your fleet's fuel efficiency?

Improving even 0.5 km/l can mean significant savings in a fleet with several vehicles.

Correct tire pressure

Underinflated tires increase consumption by up to 3% for every PSI below the recommended level. Checking pressure weekly is the highest-return action.

Up-to-date maintenance

Dirty air and fuel filters, worn spark plugs or injectors can increase consumption by 5% to 15%. The engine works harder for the same result.

Efficient driving

Harsh braking and acceleration can increase consumption by up to 20%. Training operators in eco-driving is one of the best investments in a fleet.

Avoid prolonged idling

A diesel engine consumes between 1.5 and 4 liters per hour while idling. Units waiting with the engine on generate unnecessary costs. Turning off the engine after 5 minutes of waiting saves significantly.

Optimize the load

Driving overloaded or with a poorly distributed load increases consumption. Respecting the unit's maximum weight also extends the life of tires, brakes, and suspension.

Monitor per unit

Measuring a fleet's total efficiency can hide the fact that one unit consumes 30% more than the others. Individual monitoring catches the problem before it gets worse.

A fleet of 10 tractor-trailers that improves its efficiency from 3.0 to 3.3 km/l (10% improvement) with 8,000 km/month per unit and diesel at $23 MXN/liter, saves approximately $184,000 MXN per year in fuel.
