Discover the real cost per km of your truck or fleet in Mexico and compare it with the industry average.
The cost per kilometer of a truck in Mexico includes fuel, maintenance, tires, insurance, depreciation, and operator salary — averaging between $8 and $18 MXN per km depending on the vehicle type and route. Knowing this indicator is essential for setting profitable freight rates and spotting units operating at a loss. Frequently asked questions
What items should I include in the cost per kilometer?
The main ones are fuel (30-45% of the total), operator payroll (20-30%), preventive and corrective maintenance (15-20%), insurance (5-10%), and tires (5-10%). You can also include tolls, washing, and depreciation if you log them.
Why is my cost per km higher than average?
The most common causes are: low fuel efficiency, lack of preventive maintenance (which leads to costly repairs), routes with a lot of empty km, or payroll that's high relative to the km generated. Smart Fleet helps you identify which category has the problem.
How often should I calculate the cost per kilometer?
Ideally, calculate it monthly per unit. If a unit deviates from its historical average, it's a sign that something changed: fuel prices rose, a major repair happened, or km dropped. With Smart Fleet this is calculated automatically.
How do I calculate the cost per km if I have several units?
Calculate the cost/km of each unit separately, not combined. A very efficient unit can "hide" another that operates above average. Afterward you can get the average cost of the whole fleet and compare it month to month. This calculator accepts the data for one unit at a time.
Should I include the truck's loan payment in the cost per km?
It depends on the purpose of the analysis. To calculate how much to charge for a service or freight, yes, you should include it. To measure the unit's operating efficiency, it's usually excluded because the loan is a financial cost, not an operating one. This calculator includes only operating costs by default.
Industry averages are estimates based on freight trucking data in Mexico. Actual costs vary by region, cargo type, and operating conditions.
5 ways to reduce your fleet's cost per kilometer
Lowering cost/km doesn't always require investing more. It's often a matter of measuring and managing better.
Monitor performance per unit
A truck that drops from 3.0 km/l to 2.5 km/l suddenly increases its fuel cost by 20%. Without monitoring, you never find out. Logging efficiency monthly lets you spot problem units before they impact operations.
Preventive maintenance without exception
40-60% of corrective costs can be avoided with preventive maintenance. Changing oil, filters, and checking brakes on time eliminates major repairs that not only cost money but also leave the unit parked for days.
Optimize routes to avoid empty km
If a unit drives 30% of its km empty (no cargo or no client), its effective cost/km for the business nearly doubles. Planning return routes with cargo can be the highest-impact improvement.
Train your operators in efficient driving
A driver with aggressive driving habits can consume 15-20% more fuel than a well-trained one. Smooth starts, constant highway speed, and anticipating braking are the keys.
Budget and compare monthly
The cost/km that isn't measured isn't controlled. Comparing every month lets you spot if something changed (diesel prices rose, more corrective repairs happened, km dropped) and act before it affects profitability.
